Velodrome Stadium
Stade Velodrome is the home stadium of the powerful French football club Olympique de Marseille. Located in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhone, and with a capacity of 60,031 seats, it was also a venue in 1998 FIFA World Cup. Being the largest club football ground in its country, Stade Velodrome is used by the French rugby union team as well.
Built in 1937, the stadium was a venue in Football World Cup, as France hosted the 1938 finals. In 2004, Stade Velodrome witnessed a record attendance of no less than 58,897 people coming to watch the UEFA Cup semi-final against Newcastle United. Three years later, the huge stadium hosted also the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
There are plans for Stade Velodrome to get an increase in capacity up to 80,000 seats, but this seems to depend on the club’s being sold.
Although Stade Velodrome appears to have become popular thanks to its powerful football club, it can be also related to the French rugby union team, who had an impressive run of victories at Stade Velodrome in the 2000s.
