Ullevaal Stadium
Ullevaal Stadion is a relatively small football stadium in Oslo, Norway, and the home ground of FC Lyn Oslo, Valerenga IF, as well as of the Norwegian national football team.
Ullevaal Stadion was built between 1925 and 1926 by Lyn Oslo as a multi-use stadium. In September 1926, it was opened by Crown Prince Olav; Lyn Oslo defeated Swedish team Orgryte during the inaugural match. Ullevaal became an international football venue in a short period of time, with its first international match in 1927 against Denmark.
With an initial capacity of maxim 20,000 persons, the stadium had had its capacity increased to 35,000 until 1936. Its largest attendance ever for an international match was recorded in 1935, with the occasion of a game between Norway and Sweden. 35,495 people came to join the major football event. At the moment the stadium can hold only 25,572 visitors.
The stadium’s name is a combination between the genitival derivation of the name of a Norse god, Ullr, and “vall,” which might mean “clearing in the woods,” or “hvall,” which might mean “small hill.”
