Royal Standard de Liege, simply known as Standard Liege, is a Belgian football club and the current champions of their country.
Standard Liege is one of the most popular names of Belgian football history, as the club is the third most successful in the country’s First Division. Wearing white-and-red kits, the team is known also for the nickname of “Les Rouges,” meaning “The Reds.”
The popular club was founded back in 1900 by the students of the College of Saint-Servais. They chose the name of the club after a popular Parisian club at the time, Standard de Paris.
Standard Liege were Belgian League winners nine times, runners-up ten times, as well as winners of the Belgian Cup five times and not only.
But the most important event in the club’s history took place in 1982, when Standard Liege got on the 2nd place of the UEFA Cup Winners’ competition.
In the 2007-2008 season, the club won their first Belgian League title in 25 years. In the 2008-2009, they made their second appearance in the Champions League international tournament.
In January 2009, one of the team’s players received the Football Player of the Year (Golden Shoe) title.
