Founded more than 100 years ago, in 1899, Olympique de Marseille is one of the most successful professional football clubs of France, having spent most of their existence in Ligue 1. In 1993, the team has established the major record of becoming the first and only French club to win the UEFA Champions League. They have also been French champions eight times and the winners of the Coupe de France ten time, which is also a record.
The club’s history is long and interesting, as Olympique showed their potential starting as early as with the 1920s, when they won three Coupes de France (1924, 1926 and 1927). It also won the French championship in 1929.
Olympique made a job from breaking records even starting with early ages. During the 1942-1943 season, for example, the team scored 100 goals in 30 matches, including 20 in only one match (the first 8 being scored after playing only 70 minutes!). Olympique also won the cup.
The popular French team had also periods of crisis, such as the one in the 1970s, but Olympique has always come back thanks to men such as Bernard Tapie and its own inner strength.
