Mercedes-Benz Arena

Mercedes-Benz Arena is the home ground of VfB Stuttgart. Built in 1933, the stadium was designed by German architect Paul Bonatz and was called Adolf-Hitler-Kampfbahn. It changed names twice until 1949, when it was renamed Neckarstadion, after a nearby river, Neckar. Then, in 1993, it was once again renamed, this time Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion. Only starting with the 2008-2009 season, the stadium is known as the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
VfB Stuttgart’s home stadium has a capacity of about 58,000 seats, capacity gained after the refurbishment from 2005. A specific fact about Mercedes-Benz Arena is its roof, which is easily recognizable because of its unique structure. Added only during the refurbishment before the 1993 World Athletics Championship, this roof is made of durable PVC-coated polyester that can withstand one ton of weight per one square decimeter.

Back in 1974, the stadium hosted four matches of the FIFA World Cup and in 2006 it hosted again six matches of the same major football tournament. In 1988, there were also played two matches of the UEFA European Football Championship on its surface.
In the past, the German stadium was used also for other sport events than football, but starting with 2009, it is to be redeveloped into a football-only stadium.
