Ghencea Stadium
Located in Romania’s capital city, Bucharest, Stadionul Ghencea (Ghencea Stadium) is mainly known as Steaua Stadium, after the name of the club that has had it as its home ground since its opening in 1974. When it was built, Ghencea Stadium was one of the first football-only grounds in Romania.
Having an initial capacity of 30,000 seats on benches, starting with 1991, the stadium can hold only 27,557 on plastic seats. Still, it is the 5th stadium in the country by its number of seats.
Thanks to two main renovations (1996 and 2006), Ghencea Stadium has become the most modern stadium in Romania. It might as well get an increase in capacity, according to its owner’s recent plans.
Alongside FC Steaua Bucuresti, who played their first match on Ghencea Stadium in 1974 against OFK Belgrade, Romania is also a tenant of the stadium. The national football team’s first match on this ground took place in 1977 and it was against Turkey. Since then 59 other matches have been played on Ghencea Stadium by the national team.
Romania’s most modern football ground hosted also the final of the 1998 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
