The club was founded in 1967, the result of a merger of Alkmaar ‘54 and FC Zaanstreek. The official name was Alkmaar Zaanstreek but after 1986 this was changed to simply “AZ”. Even though AZ is a rather young club, they had some success in European Competitions, playing an UEFA Cup final (lost to Ipswich Town in ‘81) and reaching the semifinals in 2005. In the 2009 season they won the Dutch Eredivisie, reaching the Champions League Group Stage for the first time.
