Amsterdam ArenA Stadium
Amsterdam ArenA, the home ground of AFC Ajax, is a UEFA 5-star stadium in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Officially opened in 1996, its construction cost no less than 140 million Euro. It has a retractable roof combined with a grass surface and it has been used for association football and American football, but also concerts and other events requiring such a large surface. Amsterdam ArenA has 51,628 seats, but for concerts it can host up to 68,000 persons.
The former home ground of the currently-retired American football club Amsterdam Admirals, the stadium hosted football matches in the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. Its name can be also linked to major music events, such The Rolling Stones or Andre Hazes concerts.
Amsterdam ArenA was officially opened by Queen Beatrix in August 1996. Her Majesty opened the stadium by making a curtain fall inside it, which revealed De Zee (The Sea), the largest painting in the world (80×126 meters). The entire procession, which was long and full of symbolism, ended with an inaugural football match between Ajax and AC Milan.
